Hands-on Introductory Linux (parts 1 & 2)

In the first session we will talk about ways to connect to Linux systems from Windows, Mac or Linux machines. Then we will discuss linux shells, go over the most important Linux commands and learn how to edit files with the vi editor. 

In the second session we will discuss the uses of scripting, then learn how to write simple shell scripts, followed by some more advanced scripting examples. Time permitting we will also present some information on how to compile software.

Requirements: You will need to bring a laptop with a functional connection to the campus WiFi.  If your laptop is windows, you will need to install PuTTY  (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html) which is free. 

In addition to the requirements listed above, you will use your CHPC account.  If you do not already have an account, we will provide a temporary  one for you at the beginning of the class.
