Hands on Introduction to Linux

In the first session we will talk about ways to connect to Linux systems from Windows, Mac or Linux machines. Then we will discuss linux shells, go over the most important Linux commands and learn how to edit files with the vi editor. 

In the second session we will discuss the uses of scripting, then learn how to write simple shell scripts, followed by some more advanced scripting examples. Time permitting we will also present some information on how to compile software.

You will need to bring a laptop with a functional connection to the campus WiFi. If your laptop is a mac, you will want to have XQuartz (http://xquartz.macosforge.org) installed.  If it is windows, you will need to install PuTTY  (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html), Xming (http://www.straightrunning.com/XmingNotes/ choose the Xming-mesa version), and WinSCP (http://winscp.net/eng/download.php).  All are free programs.

Introduction to Slurm Batch Scripts

In this session we will discuss the use of the Slurm batch scheduler on the CHPC clusters and the structure of Slurm batch scripts.

In addition to the requirements listed for the Hands on Introduction to Linux above, you must have a CHPC account.  If you do not already have an account, please register for the class by sending an email indicating that you want to participate in this class and need an account to:issues@chpc.utah.edu. Please include your name, department, e-mail, phone number and your University of Utah uNID. CHPC accounts will be provisioned for you for the duration of this class.
